NEVADA - Getting the ball to all-state center Lexy Koudelka early and often helped Nevada roll past Saydel, 58-26, in the Class 3A quarterfinals Saturday in Nevada.

Koudelka went off for 34 points on 16 of 23 shooting and she added 14 rebounds and three blocks, helping Nevada go to 17-5 and advance to the regional semifinals.

Koudelka turned in her best outing since returning from a minor knee injury Jan. 30. The Cubs also faced Saydel on that night, but were much more sluggish in a 58-46 victory.

The difference from that game to the regional final contest was great ball movement by the offense and a much better first half defensively. It also helped to have Koudelka able to play most of the game, after having to sit out long stretches in her return outing.

“It's just getting back with everybody and putting it all back together,” Koudelka said. “Working together I think is the biggest part. We just have to be able to read each other and help each other out. It helps everybody get better.”

Nevada shot 47 percent from the field in the win. The Cubs had 22 assists on 26 field goals.

The unselfish play is something the Cubs stressed after losing to a Grundy Center team rated No. 8 in 2A, 45-35, to end the regular season four nights earlier.

“We didn't play very together that game,” Nevada senior Hattie Rhodes said. “We got a little frustrated, but we kind of kept our heads up a little more this game.”

Rhodes did a little bit of everything for Nevada on Saturday. She had eight points, rebounds and assists apiece and also came up with two blocks and a pair of steals.

Kacie Rewerts added eight points and three rebounds and Addi Vorm five points, five boards and two blocks. Riley Mailey finished with two points and four rebounds and Amanda Fortmann four assists and two steals.

Defensively, Nevada held Saydel to nine points in the first half after allowing 22 in the previous meeting between the two teams. The Cubs outrebounded Saydel in the regional quarterfinals, 39-19, and totaled 10 steals and nine blocks.

Saydel ended its season at 4-19. Katie Schmidt had 11 points and two blocks, Jayda Tolentino five points and two assists and Alexis Carney four points and steals apiece for the Eagles.
