GILBERT - Gilbert’s scorching outside shooting proved too much for the Nevada boys’ basketball team Friday at Gilbert as the Cubs were dealt an 80-67 loss by the Tigers.

Gilbert nailed 13 of 22 3-pointers and shot 57 percent from the field. Nevada tried to keep up behind a big night from Trent Stahl, but the Tigers simply had too many shooters clicking from outside.

Gilbert took control with a 24-point second quarter. Nevada trailed by eight at the half and hung tough in the third quarter, but Gilbert gradually pulled away in the fourth to drop the Cubs to 9-10 overall and 8-6 in the Heart of Iowa Conference.

Stahl went off for a game-high 31 points after making nine field goals — including three 3-pointers — and all 10 of his free-throw attempts. Stahl also contributed four steals and three assists.

Luke Merfeld delivered 12 points, eight rebounds and five steals for Nevada. Devin See had seven points, seven rebounds and five assists and Om’Unique Wilkerson six points and seven rebounds.

With the win, Gilbert also went to 9-10 overall and 8-6 in the conference. Matt Ockey hit six 3-pointers and scored 22 points, Tommy Doyle had 18 points and six rebounds, Will Turner 16 points and six assists, Garrison Holck 13 points and Matt Barragy eight points, 11 rebounds, six assists and three blocks for the Tigers.

NEVADA - Nevada managed to move a lot of bodies in and out of the lineup to post a decisive 50-27 victory over Saydel Jan. 30 on senior night in Nevada.

The Cubs got 14 players on the floor and eight of them entered the scoring column. The depth overwhelmed Saydel as Nevada held a double-digit lead for almost three quarters, winning its fourth in a row to even its season record at 9-9 and go to 8-5 in the Heart of Iowa Conference.

“It’s great to see the second and third units play a lot,” Nevada senior guard Trent Stahl said. “Get some experience under their belt for the next seasons coming up.”

Stahl scored a game-high 13 points for Nevada. He said defense has been the key to Nevada’s recent hot streak.

“Working hard on defense is helping us a lot,” Stahl said. “Playing defense consistently throughout the game and getting off to a fast start.”

Fellow senior Om’Unique Wilkerson also scored in double figures with 10 points and he added five rebounds, three assists and two steals. Devin See stepped up his offensive role for the Cubs with nine points and one assist.

“I kind of wanted to send the seniors off on a good note for their last conference home game,” See said. “I kind of got hot for them.”

Luke Merfeld finished with six points, seven rebounds, two assists and two steals and Jack Higgins had three points, eight assists and three steals for Nevada. Jakob Strottman chipped in five points and two rebounds, Brayden Bottorf netted three points and Ayden Rhodes scored one.

Saydel fell to 2-17 overall and 0-13 in the conference. Colton Myers paced the Eagles with nine points and Zach Bobenhouse and Jackson Jarrell each scored five.
