HUXLEY - Nevada showed clear signs of a team that has been embattled by health issues at the Class 2A sectional wrestling meet in Huxley Saturday.

The Cubs were unable to advance any wrestlers to districts. Nevada finished with just six wins in 21 matches, placing fifth out of six teams with 100 points.

“We’ve been battling sickness and you could tell,” Nevada head coach Lonnie Ferguson said. “Our gas tank ran out.”

Luke Durkop , Cale Dumbaugh and Rodrigo Perez all missed time during the week leading up to the meet.

“It’s the wrong time to have sickness going through your room,” Ferguson said. “It’s tough. You could tell we were not on our game at all. It’d have been nice to finish a little bit different, but we kept in it and stayed and fought the whole time.”

Emilio Saldana (138 pounds) and Max Hovar (285) had the best showing for the Cubs as they each placed third. Saldana was 2-1 with two pins and Hover earned one fall.

Saldana pinned Webster City’s Brady Auderer in four minutes, 50 seconds, then lost by an 11-1 major decision to Collins-Maxwell’s Caleb Fullerton in the semifinals. Saldana won the third-place match over West Marshall’s Wyatt Edler by fall in 1:28.

“Emilio didn’t wrestle bad,” Ferguson said. “I think he could’ve wrestled a little better against Fullerton. We looked a little flat and we weren’t moving on bottom as well as we should be.”

Hovar lost by fall to Ballard’s Colin Anderson in the semifinals. He won the third-place match over Gilbert’s Morgan Smith by fall in 1:35.

“Max got third, that was alright,” Ferguson said.

Durkop, Perez and Sam Steele each earned one victory for Nevada.

Durkop came in fourth at 195 with a 1-2 record. He defeated West Marshall’s Kyle Schaper in a 1-0 battle during the quarterfinals, lost by fall to Webster City’s Caleb Olson in the semifinals, then was pinned by Ballard’s Joe Hofbauer in the third-place match.

Perez also placed fourth with a 1-2 record at 152.

Perez opened with a fall over West Marshall’s Luke Kalinay in 1:31, then lost to second-ranked Skyler Noftsger of Ballard by fall in 2:42. Perez was pinned by Gilbert’s Josh Howell in the third-place match.

Steele placed fifth with a 1-1 record at 120. He was pinned by West Marshall’s Cael Pfantz in the quarterfinals, but won the fifth-place match over Collins-Maxwell’s David Dolph in 47 seconds.

Final team scores: 1. Webster City 254 points, 2. Ballard 248, 3. West Marshall 168, 4. Gilbert 163, 5. Nevada 100, 6. Collins-Maxwell 55.
