STORY CITY - A good shooting night helped Nevada hold off Roland-Story, 53-50, for its third-consecutive victory Friday at Story City.


The Cubs shot 51 percent from the field and 50 percent from 3-point range, improving their record to 8-9 overall and 7-5 in the Heart of Iowa Conference.


Nevada led 25-17 at the half. Roland-Story pulled to within one at the end of three quarters, but the Cubs regrouped just in time to fend off the Norsemen.


Trent Stahl continued his hot play by draining four 3-pointers and scoring 21 points. He also tallied four assists and steals apiece.


Devin See had eight points and two assists; Luke Merfeld seven points, six rebounds and one block and Jack Higgins six points, five assists, three steals and one block for Nevada. Tyler Sansgaard finished with five points; Om’Unique Wilkerson three points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals and Jakob Strottman three points.

MONROE - A monster second quarter enabled Nevada to earn an impressive 71-54 road win over Prairie City-Monroe Jan. 23 at Monroe.


Still riding the emotional high of a 45-43 comeback win over North Polk three nights earlier, when they outscored the Comets 25-2 to end the game, the Cubs used another massive run to put away PCM. Nevada outscored the Mustangs 28-4 in the second quarter to turn a six-point deficit into a huge 40-22 lead at the half.


The Cubs pushed that lead to an insurmountable 53-27 advantage by the end of the third quarter, moving to 7-9 overall and 6-5 in the Heart of Iowa Conference. PCM, the second-place team in the HOIC behind South Hamilton, fell to 13-4 overall and 9-2 in the conference.


Nevada shot at a strong 53-percent rate from the field and made 12 of 18 free throws. The Cubs held PCM to 4 of 16 shooting from 3-point range and totaled 10 steals on defense.


Trent Stahl netted 25 points for the second game in a row to lead Nevada. Stahl also had five assists, two steals and one block.


Om’Unique Wilkerson registered 17 points, four rebounds, four steals and two assists for Nevada. Jack Higgins had nine points, four rebounds, three assists and one block; Luke Merfeld seven points, nine rebounds and four blocks and Devin See six points and rebounds apiece.


Andrew Van Ryswyk paced PCM with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Reed Worth scored 12 points for the Mustangs.
