GILBERT - The Nevada wrestling team fell short against Gilbert and Ogden in a triangular dual at Gilbert Jan. 18.
The Cubs lost to Gilbert by a 57-15 score and fell to Ogden by a 43-30 margin. They had to go without three senior starters and had a couple newcomers competing as their dual record dropped to 3-12.
“We’re missing some people and that makes a big difference, especially when you’re forfeiting those weights,” Nevada head wrestling coach Lonnie Ferguson said. “Ogden — you give up four weights, you give up 24 points and you get beat (by) less than that. It’s tough to come back.”
Ferguson said he was pleased with how his team finished each dual. The Cubs won three of the final five matches against Gilbert and four of the last five versus Ogden.
The Cub coach also said his wrestlers have plenty to work on in order to be more competitive.
“We’ve got some weights we’ve got to wrestle harder,” Ferguson said. “We’ve got to be scrapping a little bit more and need to be in better positions. A lot of our positions we’re down — we need to be up and moving.”
Senior Max Hovar stepped up and won both of his matches for Nevada at 285 pounds.
“Max wrestled well,” Ferguson said. “It was nice to see.”
Jacob MacVey also competed well at 170, getting one win and losing in overtime in his second match.
“MacVey had a decent night,” Ferguson said. “He’s trying things that he hasn’t tried before, so he’s kind of new at it and not the best at it. He’s still a work in progress, but he’s getting better.”
In the dual with Gilbert, Hovar and MacVey both won 5-4 battles. MacVey defeated Cayden Meskan and Hovar downed Morgan Smith.
Luke Durkop toppled Gilbert’s Jacob Torresi by a 3-0 score at 220 and Zach Stinn received a forfeit at 126 to account for the other Cub points versus the Tigers.
In the dual with Ogden, Hovar scored a fall over the Bulldogs’ Bryant Dutcher in 4:48 and MacVey dropped a 3-1 decision to Garret Bales in overtime. Cale Dumbaugh pinned Ogden’s Avery McCloud in 2:31, Jay Calentine stuck Justus Rude in 50 seconds and Luis Lopez (113) and Sam Steele (120) each received a forfeit.
Gilbert defeated Ogden by a 64-12 score in the other dual at the meet.
