COLO - A fast start combined with a strong second half to give the Colo-NESCO boys’ basketball team a decisive 69-30 victory over Collins-Maxwell in the season opener for both teams Nov. 28 in Colo.

The Royals jumped out to a 13-0 lead and never trailed, getting off to a great start in the Iowa Star Conference.

“It was a great game,” Colo-NESCO senior post Matthew Hill said. “We came out good. We hit a wall in the second quarter, but overall we played pretty well.”

Hill made 13 field goals and scored a game-high 26 points. He also had nine rebounds and four blocks.

Jacob Clatt added 14 points and six rebounds inside as the Royals overwhelmed the Spartans with their size advantage and athleticism. Hill also credited the team’s offensive success to the play of point guard Philip Bower, who constantly got the ball to the Royal post players in good position.

“Philip (did) a good job — we had a lot of assists and that kind of helped,” Hill said. “We have a lot of scorers who can score a lot of points and we just work it around and try to hit the open man.”

Bower handed out 11 assists and he also scored 11 points and came up with three steals. He helped Colo-NESCO shoot at a solid 49-percent clip from the field, despite making just 1 of 11 3-pointers.

Bryce Niemeyer added seven points, five rebounds and one block; Sean Cutler six points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals and Kelly Gray five points and steals apiece plus three assists for the Royals.

Even with the decisive win, Colo-NESCO still saw it has plenty of things it needs to clean up. The Royals sputtered in the second quarter, scoring just nine points as Collins-Maxwell got as close as 30-19 on a basket from Brett Livesay.

“We just had to be mentally strong,” Hill said. “We had to stop going after steals and just play our normal defense.”

Carter Fricke led Collins-Maxwell with 13 points, five assists and two steals. Mike Hartgers tallied eight points and three rebounds, Livesay six points, 10 rebounds and two blocks and Austin Snoody three points.
