NORWALK - Nevada had difficulties slowing Norwalk’s passing game and avoiding offensive mistakes in a 34-7 loss to the Warriors during a Class 3A District 6 football game Friday at Norwalk.

Norwalk put the game away by halftime after scoring three touchdowns through the air, building a 31-0 lead at the break. Drew Rosonke caught long touchdown strikes of 63 and 33 yards from Max Sutcliffe, Cooper Beving found Shane Hochstetler on a 4-yard scoring pass and Grant Garner added a short touchdown run for the Warriors.

Nevada tried its best to hang around — finishing with three more first downs than the Warriors and just 45 fewer yards. But four turnovers made it tough for Nevada to sustain drives and the Cubs were unable to force a single Norwalk miscue.

“We got beat by a good football team Friday night,” Nevada head football coach Andrew Kleeman said. “They did a good job of executing and making plays in the first half. We couldn’t capitalize on some drives early on in the game and had four turnovers, which didn’t allow our offense to gain any rhythm.”

But Nevada never folded, despite falling down big in the first half. The Cubs outscored Norwalk 7-3 over the final two quarters.

“We made some adjustments at half, and the kids did a nice job taking away what had worked for them in the first half,” Kleeman said. “I was proud of our effort throughout the game. We will continue to learn how to deal with adversity. We’ve shown some flashes of really good football throughout the season. Consistency is key, especially when facing great competition.”

Trent Stahl scored Nevada’s touchdown on a 6-yard run midway through the fourth quarter and Luke Fevold added the extra point. Stahl finished with 42 yards rushing and 18 receiving and added 7.5 tackles.

Jakob Strottman ran for 98 yards and made 6.5 tackles and two sacks defensively for the Cubs. Cam Shill threw for 80 yards, Brendan Sellberg had 28 yards both rushing and receiving, Masen Hapes ran for 16 yards and Jack Higgins caught two passes for 14 yards and totaled five tackles plus half a sack.

Luke Merfeld picked up one sack, Matt Chitty three tackles and half a sack, Bronzon Mason and Jack West each chipped in half a sack and Preston Cattanach recorded six tackles. Om’Unique Wilkerson came up with one catch for 13 yards for Nevada.

The Cubs fell to 5-3 overall and 3-3 in 3A District 6 with the loss. Nevada wraps up the season at No. 4 Pella (7-1, 6-0) Friday and the game starts at 7:30 p.m. in Pella.

Norwalk improved to 6-2 overall and 5-1 in the district. Rosonke had three catches for 119 yards, Sutcliffe threw for 114 yards and ran for 32, Garner ran for 106 yards and Carson Raper, Dylan Wolfe and Scott Anderson each intercepted a pass for the Warriors.
