COLO - A potent ground game got the job done for the Colo-NESCO football team against Coon Rapids-Bayard Friday at Colo.
The Royals racked up 449 rushing yards and 540 in total offense en route to a 76-44 victory to even their record at 1-1 on the season.
“I am very proud of the performance of our players against Coon Rapids-Bayard,” Colo-NESCO head football coach Josh Nessa said. “We made many improvements in our run game and blocking.”
Colo-NESCO (1-1) led 44-30 at the half. Garrett Packer ran for three touchdowns on runs of 12, nine and 45 yards and he also found Philip Bower on a 42-yard touchdown pass to help the Royals go up at the half.
Packer continued his assault in the second half with three more touchdown runs. He found pay dirt on runs of 19, three and 72 yards.
Packer ended the game with 243 yards and six touchdowns rushing and 61 yards and one score through the air. Bower ran for 90 yards and a touchdown, caught the one long touchdown reception and also threw for 30 yards; Mason Lytle chipped in 75 yards and one touchdown rushing, plus 19 yards receiving.
Francis Bower added 49 yards and one touchdown on the ground for Colo-NESCO. Jacob Clatt made one catch for 30 yards.
The Royal defense was inconsistent against a balanced Coon Rapids-Bayard attack. Colo-NESCO gave up 386 total yards, but got better as the game went on, limiting the Crusaders to 14 points in the second half.
“Defensively, we will have to improve our pass defense, but on a positive note our defensive line play improved and we put good pressure on the Crusader offense,” Nessa said. “We tallied six tackles for a loss, including two sacks and an interception.”
Bryce Niemeyer had 9.5 tackles and a sack, Connor Clark made six tackles and half a sack and Adam Texeira also had half a sack. Packer chipped in 8.5 tackles, Francis Bower had 7.5, Philip Bower totaled 5.5 and Ethan Wilson racked up 6.5, plus an interception.
Peyton Clipperton threw for 154 yards and five touchdowns and ran for 59 yards and one score for Coon Rapids-Bayard. Chase Heithoff caught four passes for 69 yards and three touchdowns, Lane Namanny made three grabs for 57 yards and a score and Jeffrey Eagle added 87 yards rushing for the Crusaders, who dropped to 0-2.
Colo-NESCO opens 8-man District 5 play this Friday against Meskwaki (0-2).
“We look to keep improving this week and will play a road game on Friday,” Nessa said.
The Royals’ game with the Warriors takes place at 7 p.m. Friday in Tama.
