COLO - For three quarters, the Colo-NESCO football team played AGWSR near even in its season opener Friday at Colo.

But the Royals couldn’t shake a brutal second quarter, suffering a 49-20 loss at the hands of the Cougars.

Colo-NESCO was outscored 28-0 in the second quarter. The Royals led 12-6 after the first 12 minutes before things fell apart.

“We took one on the chin from a very tough and physical AGWSR team,” Colo-Nesco head football coach Josh Nessa said.

In the first quarter, Philip Bower returned the opening kickoff of the game 65 yards to pay dirt and Sean Cutler found Garrett Packer on an 11-yard touchdown pass for the Royals. Liam Stubbe had a 55-yard touchdown scamper for AGWSR in the opening period.

The second quarter saw Stubbe find the end zone on runs from 50 and 10 yards out and Lucas Starr and Aaron Roelfs added 37 and 17-yard scoring runs respectively for the Cougars. The AGWSR defense also stepped up big, keeping Colo-NESCO off the board in the quarter.

The second half saw Colo-NESCO show great improvement defensively. But the Royal offense continued to have problems.

The two teams combined for only 23 points in the second half — all coming in the third quarter. Cutler found Packer with a 16-yard touchdown pass and Stubbe caught a 20-yard scoring strike from Roelfs and added an 18-yard run into the end zone.

“We were able to move the ball well at times and improved as the game continued,” Nessa said. “Our passing game was pretty successful and we passed a lot more than in past years, scoring two passing touchdowns. We also won the turnover battle as well.”

Colo-NESCO recovered three fumbles — one apiece from Bryce Niemeyer, Ethan Wilson and Martin Nicholas — and AGWSR had an interception by Stubbe. Niemeyer also had eight tackles and one sack, Packer picked up 10 tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss, Bower tallied seven stops and Wilson finished with 5.5.

On offense, Packer ran for 78 yards and added 36 receiving. Cutler completed 9 of 17 passes for 68 yards with two scores and one interception and Bower ran for 73 yards and added 22 receiving.

Stubbe ran for 247 yards and three touchdowns and also had the one touchdown reception. Starr added 64 yards and two touchdowns rushing, Alec Stahl ran for 55 yards and Joe Wiarda made 10 tackles and two stops behind the line for the Cougars.

Up next for Colo-Nesco is another non-district home game. The Royals host Coon Rapids-Bayard (0-1) this Friday at Colo, with the game set to start at 7 p.m.
