The Nevada baseball team placed two individuals on the all-Heart of Iowa Conference first team in baseball for the 2017 season.


Senior pitcher/infielder Tyler Shafer and junior shortstop Trent Stahl were both recognized for their efforts in helping Nevada go from one conference win a year ago to 8-8 this summer.


Shafer was 6-2 with an 0.72 earned-run average, 78 strikeouts and 12 walks in 58 ⅔ innings and he made 16 putouts, 11 assists and only three errors in the field during conference games. At the plate, Shafer hit .426 with a .523 on-base percentage, three doubles, five steals, 12 runs and 10 RBI.


Stahl posted a .422 batting average, .511 slugging average, four doubles, nine runs and four RBI in conference games. At shortstop, he made 29 assists and 24 putouts with just two errors.


The rest of the all-HOIC first team was comprised of: Saydel’s T.J. Stephenson, Devin Porter, Craig Garrison and Cole Riddlebarger; North Polk’s Matthew Antle, Ben Rupe, Colten Parkins and Colby Cupp; Gilbert’s Garrison Holck; Roland-Story’s Jake Ford and Collins-Maxwell-Baxter’s Brady Kemp.


Making the all-HOIC second team were: Saydel’s Joe Boehler, Cash Lee, Nate Sepich and Devon VanHouten; Prairie City-Monroe’s Noah Henkenius, Reed Worth and Ethan Thomas; Gilbert’s Mason Williams, Nathan Chasey and Steven Lawrence; North Polk’s Jeff Lamp; South Hamilton’s Blake Barquist and Roland-Story’s Zach Shadlow.


Senior catcher Macade Matuska and junior pitcher/outfielder Preston Cattanach were named all-HOIC honorable mention from Nevada.


Matuska hit .317 with a .451 OBP, one double, two steals, seven runs and 11 RBI in conference games. Behind the plate he made nine assists and threw out six base runners with only one error.


Cattanach was 1-1 with 13 strikeouts and 11 walks in 17 ⅓ innings on the mound and he totaled four putouts and two assists with no errors in the field during HOIC competition. At the plate, Cattanach hit .400 with a .563 OBP, two doubles, three steals, seven runs and eight RBI.
