MASON CITY - The Colo-Nesco baseball team simply ran into a buzz saw against No. 2 Newman Catholic in the first round of Class 1A district play July 11 at Mason City as the Royals suffered a 19-2 setback in four innings.
Colo-Nesco kept within 1-1 after one inning of play. But Newman Catholic erupted for a 13-run second inning to take charge.
Newman Catholic added five more runs in the third. Colo-Nesco tacked on a second score in the fourth, but could get no closer as the game ended due to the 15-run rule.
The Royals finished the season at 7-21-1. Jacob Clatt took the loss on the mound after giving up nine earned runs on four hits and three walks in 1 ⅓ innings.
Mason Lytle allowed five earned runs on two hits and three walks in ⅔ of an inning and Matthew Hill surrendered one earned run on four hits with two strikeouts and two walks in ⅓ of an inning. Bryce Niemeyer tossed a scoreless ⅔ of an inning, striking out one and giving up one hit.
Sean Cutler went 2-for-2 with a run, Garret Tiarks singled and scored, Niemeyer was 1-for-2 with an RBI and Philip Bower stole a base and drove in a run for the Royals.
Josh Thilges went 2-for-2 with three runs and RBI apiece to pace Newman Catholic. Andrew Morse threw all four innings and gave up one earned run with four strikeouts and no walks as the winning Knight pitcher.
