DES MOINES - No hits equaled no victory for Nevada against Ballard in the semifinals of Class 3A district baseball Friday at Saydel High School in Des Moines.
Tyler Shafer threw an outstanding game for Nevada on the mound, but the Cubs got no offensive production off Ballard hurler Austin Edwards in a 2-0 loss.
“We just didn’t hit the ball,” Nevada head baseball coach Blake Jobe said. “It just really wasn’t our night.”
The only Cub base runner to get on against Edwards was Shafer in the very first at-bat of the game. Shafer reached on an error and was bunted over to second by Cam Shill, but he was left stranded after Edwards forced Trent Stahl to fly out and Bronzon Mason to line out to third.
From then on, no Cub reached base. Edwards finished the game with five strikeouts and no walks.
Shafer did his best to keep Nevada in the game.
Shafer gave up five hits and worked around three Cub errors. He finished with four strikeouts and only one walk in the final outing of his career.
Nevada finished the season at 14-11. Despite the loss, Jobe said he is proud of the progress the team made in his first season as coach. The Cubs only won two games all of last season.
“It was a rebuilding year and we took a lot of nice steps forward,” Jobe said. “We started off extremely well, floundered around in the middle of the season, then finished hot at the end. It would’ve been nice to win a couple of district games to really establish ourselves as a program on the rise, but overall it was a very successful year.”
Ballard advanced to the district finals with a 15-19 record. Codey Erickson came up with the big hit of the game for Ballard in the bottom of the third inning with a bases-loaded single to score both Bomber runs.
Erickson ended the game with two singles. Jack Luster, Clay Estrem and Reece Huen each picked up one base hit for Ballard.
