SULLY - A good first inning wasn’t enough for the Colo-Nesco softball team in a 6-2 loss to Lynnville-Sully during the Class 1A regional quarterfinals July 5 at Sully.
The Royals seized a 2-0 lead after the first inning. Mackenna Ruffcorn and Gracie Kettwig each drove in a run and Grace Stalzer and courtesy runner Rylie Reischauer each scored once for Colo-Nesco.
But the Royal bats went silent over the next six innings. Colo-Nesco finished the game with just four hits.
Lynnville-Sully took the lead in the bottom of the second with three runs. The Hawks added two more runs in the third and another in the fourth to pull away.
Ruffcorn ended up 2-for-3 with a double, MacKenzie Niemeyer doubled and walked and Kettwig finished 1-for-3 for Colo-Nesco at the plate. Stalzer, Chelsea Henze and Rylee Purvis each walked once.
Ruffcorn gave up four earned runs on nine hits and one walk with three strikeouts in six innings as the losing pitcher. With the loss, Colo-Nesco finished the season at 15-17.
Lynnville-Sully improved to 18-11. Mallory Loftus finished with two strikeouts and four walks in seven innings as the winning pitcher and Brenna Lanser doubled twice, scored and drove in a run to pace the Hawks on offense.
