NEVADA - The Nevada baseball team closed out Heart of Iowa Conference play with a 4-1 victory over Prairie City-Monroe July 6 at Billy Sunday Field.

The game was tied at 1-1 going into the bottom of the sixth inning. The Cubs stepped up with three runs in the bottom of the inning and Tyler Shafer finished off the Mustangs in the seventh.

Shafer tossed a four-hitter to get the victory. He rang up an impressive 13 strikeouts and only walked one batter.

Trent Stahl was 2-for-2 with a double, run and two RBI to lead Nevada at the plate. Macade Matuska went 1-for-2 with two walks, one steal and two RBI and Shafer finished 1-for-2 with two walks and runs apiece.

James Carsrud also singled, walked and scored and Jack Higgins, Brody Schomaker and Zac Sharp each drew one walk for Nevada. The Cubs finished HOIC play at 8-8.

PCM ended 9-7 in the conference. Brady Fagen allowed three runs on three walks and two strikeouts in 1 ⅔ innings of relief as the losing Mustang pitcher and Noah Clark went 2-for-3 with an RBI for PCM on offense.

NEVADA - Nevada came up big on offense when it had to in a 6-4 rain-shortened win over BCLUW in five innings July 3 at Billy Sunday Field.

The Cubs took a 4-1 lead into the fifth inning, only to see the Comets tie the score in the top of the inning. But Nevada struck back with two runs in the bottom of the frame and that turned out to be the difference as the game was called at the conclusion of the inning.

Tyler Shafer was 2-for-3 with two runs, Trent Stahl went 2-for-3 with one run and RBI apiece and Preston Cattanach singled, walked, scored and drove in a run to lead Nevada on offense. Cam Shill was 1-for-2 with a run, walk and RBI; Thomas Crawford singled and scored; and Macade Matuska and Bronzon Mason each drove in one run.

James Carsrud was the winning pitcher. He gave up three earned runs on six hits with four strikeouts and two walks, going all five innings.

Brad Barkema homered, doubled and drove in three runs and Jack Garber doubled and scored for BCLUW. Blake Mann was the losing Comet pitcher as he went 4 ⅔ innings and surrendered three earned runs with three strikeouts and two walks.
