MCCALLSBURG - Patience at the plate keyed Colo-Nesco’s 20-0 drubbing of GMG in five innings during the opening round of Class 1A regional softball competition Monday in McCallsburg.

The Royals drew an impressive 16 walks and added nine hits, burning the Wolverines for two nine-run innings to end the game early and advance to the regional quarterfinals against Lynnville-Sully.

Freshman Gracie Kettwig came up with the first big hit of the game for Colo-Nesco to help get the ball rolling. She hit a two-run single in the first inning and later added a double in the second inning.

“(I’m) just working hard during practice,” Kettwig said. “Just trying to be patient in the batter’s box and connect (with) the ball.”

Senior Kassie Robinson added an RBI triple for Colo-Nesco in the second inning when she found a hole in the outfield. Robinson went 1-for-2 with three walks, three runs and two RBI.

“When (Alyssa Raymond) pitched that to me, I (saw) there was a wide-open spot right there,” Robinson said of her triple. “So I’m just going to turn and rip it right down the middle.”

Robinson is one of only two seniors on the roster for Colo-Nesco, along with Grace Stalzer.

“Five years,” Robinson said, “don’t want it to end.”

Molly Barten added a two-run single, Stalzer had an RBI on a bases-loaded walk and Mackenna Ruffcorn drove in two runs with bases-loaded walks for Colo-Nesco. Chelsea Henze had two RBI, McKenzie Niemeyer hit two RBI singles and Ayvarie Bappe and Rylee Purvis each drew a walk with the bases loaded.

Ruffcorn was the winning pitcher. She only allowed one hit — a leadoff single to Madi Krull in the bottom of the first inning — and walked just two batters with seven strikeouts.

“Some nights are better than others and this night was one of the good ones,” Ruffcorn said. “My changeup was working, which is always a good thing, and the corners were there.”

Ruffcorn will take getting to pitch her team into the regional quarterfinals after having to sit out last season with an ACL injury.

“It does feel good,” Ruffcorn said.

The victory put Colo-Nesco at 15-16. GMG ended its season at 5-20.

Emily Vaughn was the losing pitcher for the Wolverines. Angel Schewe and Ashanti Rinehart each drew one walk for GMG.
