NEVADA - The Nevada baseball team ran out of gas in a 9-1 loss to Roland-Story in nine innings Friday at Billy Sunday Field.


Tyler Shafer pitched a brilliant game for 8 ⅓ innings as the two teams were deadlocked at 1-1 going into the top of the ninth. Roland-Story went up 1-0 in the sixth and the Cubs tied the game in dramatic fashion in the seventh as Shafer drove in Kyle Bauman with the tying run to force extra innings.


Shafer kept Roland-Story off the board in the eighth, but had to exit in the ninth after throwing 113 pitches. The Norsemen took full advantage of his absence, exploding for eight runs in the top of the inning and the Cubs never recovered, falling to 9-7 overall and 7-6 in the Heart of Iowa Conference.


Shafer gave up one unearned run and he only allowed one hit. He finished the game with a whopping 14 strikeouts and only two walks.


Macade Matuska was the losing Nevada pitcher. Matuska surrendered seven runs on just three hits with three walks and Drew Hardy gave up one run on two hits with one strikeout in ⅔ of an inning.


Shafer finished 2-for-5 with an RBI and a steal and Bauman was 1-for-2 with two walks and a run. Preston Cattanach singled and walked twice, Trent Stahl had a single and a walk, Matuska singled and stole a base and Bronzon Mason also had a single for Nevada.


Dylan Matheason gave up one run on one hit and walk apiece with four strikeouts in 3 ⅓ innings of relief as the winning Roland-Story pitcher. Jake Ford threw 5 ⅔ scoreless innings and struck out seven with five walks for the Norsemen.


Matheason and Ford also drove in two runs apiece on offense.

JEWELL - Nevada had its best offensive outing of the season in a 15-6 victory over South Hamilton June 21 in Jewell.


The Cubs drilled South Hamilton pitching for 17 hits. They exploded for seven runs in the first inning and never looked back, easily overcoming five Hawk runs in the bottom of the first.


Tyler Shafer went 4-for-6 with a double, steal, three runs and two RBI and Bronzon Mason was 3-for-5 with one walk, one run and four RBI to lead the Cubs’ offensive barrage.


Trent Stahl was 2-for-2 with a double, two walks and three runs; Preston Cattanach ended up 2-for-4 with a walk, two runs and two RBI and Thomas Crawford went 2-for-3 with a walk, two steals, two runs and an RBI. Zac Sharp went 2-for-3 with one run and RBI apiece; Kyle Bauman singled and drove in a run; James Carsrud doubled and scored; Cam Shill walked twice, scored once and drove in a run and Macade Matuska drew three free passes and had one run and RBI apiece.


Cattanach gave up five runs — two earned — on four hits and two walks with three strikeouts as the winning Cub pitcher. Shill allowed one run on one hit and two walks with two strikeouts in three innings.


Zeke Balderas gave up seven runs — three earned — with three walks in ⅓ of an inning as the losing South Hamilton pitcher. Blake Barquist was 2-for-4 with a double, steal and two runs for the Hawks on offense.

STATE CENTER - Nevada picked up a big non-conference win over West Marshall June 20 at State Center as the Cubs downed a strong Trojan team, 4-3.


Nevada trailed 3-2 after three innings. Neither team scored over the next three frames, then the Cubs went on top with two runs in the top of the seventh.


Ace pitcher Tyler Shafer came in to close out the Trojans in the bottom of the seventh to give Nevada the win.


Shafer struck out the side and didn’t give up a hit or walk in the seventh to earn the save. James Carsrud threw six quality innings as the winning Cub pitcher, allowing three earned runs on three hits with four strikeouts and three walks.


Jack Higgins was 2-for-4 with a run, Macade Matuska went 2-for-3 and Cam Shill ended up 1-for-3 with a walk, run and two RBI for Nevada with the bat. Trent Stahl singled, stole a base and scored; Zac Sharp doubled and drove in a run; Preston Cattanach walked and scored and Brody Schomaker drove in one run.


Kyle Bauman and Thomas Crawford each drew one walk for Nevada versus the Trojans.


West Marshall fell to 17-5 with the loss. Nat Markle gave up two runs on one hit and two walks with a pair of strikeouts in ⅔ of an inning as the losing Trojan pitcher.


David Disney doubled, scored and drove in a run; Cameron Bannister went 1-for-2 with a walk, four steals, run and RBI and Alex Dickey was 1-for-3 with an RBI for the Trojans at the plate.
