NEVADA - The Nevada softball team was unable to take advantage of opportunities in a 10-3 Heart of Iowa Conference loss to Roland-Story June 22 at Nevada.
The Cubs outhit Roland-Story, 8-6. Nevada also had three doubles to no extra-base hits for the Norse.
Defensive mistakes and walks hurt Nevada. The Cubs issued eight free passes and they only picked up one walk on offense.
Roland-Story broke a 1-1 tie with four runs in the third. The Norse went up 10-1 after five innings, leaving Nevada with too much ground to make up over the final two innings as the Cubs dropped to 3-17 overall and 1-11 in the HOIC.
Addi Vorm was 2-for-4 with a double and a run; Katie Sullivan doubled, walked and scored and Grace Francis doubled and drove in a run for Nevada on offense. Gracie Barloon finished 2-for-3 with an RBI, Mady Farmer singled and drove in a run and Sydney Mosinski singled and scored.
Caitlyn Sharp added one steal for Nevada.
Madi McGaffin was the losing Cub pitcher. She allowed six runs — four earned — on three hits and four walks in four innings. Rebekah Ritter surrendered four runs — three earned — on three hits and four walks in three innings for the Cubs.
Hailey Louw gave up one run with three strikeouts and no walks in four innings as the winning Roland-Story pitcher. Jenna Clark drove in two runs and Susie Weaver went 1-for-3 with a walk, two steals, two runs and an RBI for the Norse at the plate.

STATE CENTER - Nevada couldn’t get the bats going against No. 9 (Class 3A) West Marshall in an 8-1 loss to the Trojans June 20 at State Center.
The Cubs finished the game with only three hits. Their only run came in the top of the fourth inning.
Addi Vorm doubled and walked, and Riley Mailey and Ellie Gray each singled once for Nevada. Emma Griffin drew one walk and Caitlyn Sharp stole two bases and scored Nevada’s only run.
Madi McGaffin went the distance on the mound for Nevada. She allowed four earned runs on eight hits with seven walks and three strikeouts in six innings.
Kallie Malloy finished with 10 strikeouts and two walks in seven innings as the winning Trojan pitcher. Renae Schaper went 3-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI and Kayla Cripps was 2-for-4 with two runs and three RBI for the Trojans offensively.

DES MOINES - Four strong innings weren’t enough for Nevada in a 7-2 non-conference loss to Grand View Christian June 19 in Des Moines.
The Cubs held a 2-0 lead going into the bottom of the fifth inning. Nevada scored both of its runs in the top of the first.
But Grand View Christian got hot in the bottom of the fifth. The Thunder put five runs on the board in the inning and Nevada was unable to recover.
Nevada produced eight hits in defeat. Riley Mailey, Ellie Gray and Grace Francis each had two hits apiece for the Cubs.
Mailey doubled and scored, and Francis scored and drove in a run. Gracie Barloon was 1-for-3 with a walk, Katie Sullivan singled once and walked twice, Mady Farmer drove in a run, Libby Burlage walked once and Caitlyn Sharp stole one base.
Madi McGaffin was the losing pitcher. She went all six innings and surrendered seven runs on seven hits with six walks.
Makaylia Patterson gave up one earned run with four walks and two strikeouts in seven innings as the winning Thunder pitcher. Mack Fry was 1-for-2 with two walks, runs and RBI apiece and Sami Mealey doubled, scored and drove in a run for Grand View Christian.
