ROLAND - Nevada downed Colo-Nesco for a victory at the Kiwanis Invitational held last Thursday through Saturday at Bill Hennessy Field in Roland.
The Cubs defeated the Royals for the second time this season with a 5-1 triumph Saturday morning. Nevada dropped its other three contests and Colo-Nesco endured an 0-4 two days in Roland as the Cubs moved to 3-14 and the Royals’ season record dropped to 10-11.
Nevada took advantage of 14 hits on offense against Colo-Nesco. The Cubs scored twice in the first inning and added one run apiece in the third, fourth and sixth frames.
Grace Francis was the big catalyst for Nevada on offense. Francis went 4-for-4 with a run and four RBI.
Addi Vorm singled and drove in a run, Libby Burlage finished 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs, Ellie Gray went 2-for-4 with a run and Mackenzie Garrett was 2-for-4 with a walk for the Cubs. Riley Mailey singled and scored, Mady Farmer singled, walked and stole a base and Gracie Barloon singled once.
Garrett gave up one earned run on five hits with five strikeouts and two walks in seven innings as the winning pitcher. Rylee Purvis was the losing Colo-Nesco pitcher and Kassie Robinson threw 1 ⅓ innings for the Royals.
Chelsea Henze went 1-for-3 with an RBI and Purvis singled and scored offensively for Colo-Nesco. Robinson, Gracie Kettwig and Megan Carlson each singled once for the Royals in the loss.
Nevada came up short in a 13-9 contest versus West Branch in five innings in its other game on Saturday.
In the loss to West Branch the Cubs trailed 9-8 after an explosive first two innings. West Branch scored two runs in the third, Nevada answered with a score in the fourth then West Branch put up two more runs in the fifth to hold off the Cubs in a shortened affair.
Francis, Gray, Mailey and Garrett each drove in two runs versus West Branch. Francis doubled, walked and scored twice; Gray went 2-for-3 with a run, Mailey picked up two steals and runs apiece plus a walk and Garrett ended up 1-for-3.
Vorm was 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI, Farmer doubled, Burlage singled and swiped two bases and Barloon also singled once. Sydney Mosinski walked two times and crossed the plate twice and Caitlyn Sharp and Samara Sharp each scored one run.
Madi McGaffin gave up six earned runs on six hits and three walks as the losing Nevada pitcher versus West Branch. Garrett went five innings and surrendered six runs - four earned - on nine hits with one strikeout and walk apiece.
In Colo-Nesco’s second game on Saturday the Royals dropped a 4-3 heartbreaker to Roland-Story. Both teams scored three times in the third inning, but Colo-Nesco didn’t score again and the Norse put up a run in the fourth that ended up being the difference.
Mackenna Ruffcorn allowed four runs - two earned - on nine hits with three strikeouts and two walks in six innings as the losing Colo-Nesco pitcher versus Roland-Story.
Mckenzie Niemeyer doubled and scored and Purvis singled and scored against Roland-Story. Claire Skinner walked and scored, Ruffcorn and Grace Stalzer both singled once and Henze drove in a run.
On Thursday Nevada fell to two ranked Class 4A teams in Ballard and Boone. Ballard handed the Cubs an 8-0 setback and Boone prevailed by a 12-4 margin.
McGaffin threw a great game to keep Nevada within 3-0 of Ballard going into the sixth inning of Nevada’s first game of the Kiwanis Invitational. Ballard got some breathing room in the sixth with two runs and Maggie Larson dealt a fatal blow to Nevada in the seventh with a three-run home run.
McGaffin took the loss versus the Bombers. She allowed six earned runs on 13 hits with one strikeout and no walks.
Francis was 3-for-3 with a double offensively against Ballard. Mailey, Gray and Katie Sullivan each singled once for the Cubs.
Hannah Elliott gave up three hits and finished with one strikeout and walk apiece in three innings as the winning Bomber pitcher. Larson went 2-for-4 with three runs and RBI apiece and Elliott finished 3-for-4 with a run and two RBI for the Bombers.
Nevada suffered a 12-4 setback at the hands of Boone in six innings later on Thursday. The Cubs shot out to a 3-1 lead, but Boone put up seven runs in the third to take charge.
Nevada posted 10 hits in the loss. Sullivan was 3-for-3 with a run and two RBI, Mailey went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI and Francis ended up 2-for-3 with a run as the top Cub hitters.
Barloon singled, walked and drove in a run and Vorm and Mosinski each singled once. Bailey Crain drew two walks and Farmer and Caitlyn Sharp each scored once.
Garrett took the loss. She gave up 10 runs - seven earned - on 12 hits with two strikeouts and no walks in four innings. McGaffin surrendered two runs - one earned - on four hits with one strikeout in two innings.
Emma Dighton was 3-for-4 with a home run, double and two RBI, Dianna Slight homered and finished 3-for-4 with two runs and Victoria Lewis drove in four runs for Boone. Emily Ades picked up the win for the Toreadors after allowing one run with three walks in 4 ⅔ innings.
Colo-Nesco’s first game on Thursday was a 12-0 loss to Mount Vernon in four innings. Robinson was the losing pitcher after allowing 11 earned runs on 14 hits with two walks in 3 ⅔ innings.
Stalzer and Claire Skinner each singled for Colo-Nesco’s only hits off Mount Vernon pitcher Madi Speed. Sydney Hauser was 3-for-3 with two runs and an RBI and Bailey Sullivan and Sammy Moss each knocked in two runs for the Mustangs.
Colo-Nesco suffered an 11-0 setback to Gilbert in five innings in its second game on Thursday. The Royals were hurt by a seven-run Tiger fourth inning.
Ruffcorn, Robinson and Molly Barten each singled for the only Colo-Nesco hits and Stalzer drew two walks. Ruffcorn allowed eight earned runs on nine hits with with three walks and one strikeout in four innings to take the loss.
Jordyn Pike struck out seven and walked two in five innings as the victorious Gilbert pitcher. Pike also doubled, homered and drove in two runs and Peyton Clatt homered and knocked in three runs for the Tigers.
