GILBERT - The Nevada softball team started strong, but couldn’t keep up the pace in a 4-3 loss to Gilbert Friday at Gilbert.

The Cubs led 3-1 going into the third inning. They scored twice in the first inning and once in the third.

But the offense was unable to get anyone home over the final five innings. Gilbert eventually tied the score in the fourth then took the lead in the sixth and held on to drop Nevada to 1-10 in the Heart of Iowa Conference.

Grace Francis went 2-for-4 with a double and a run, Sydney Mosinski was 2-for-3 with a run and Gracie Barloon also finished 2-for-3 as part of Nevada’s nine-hit attack on offense. Ellie Gray singled and scored, Mackenzie Garrett and Katie Sullivan both singled once, Riley Mailey walked once and Caitlyn Sharp and Mady Farmer each stole one base.

Garrett took the loss on the mound. She allowed four runs on 13 hits with two walks and one strikeout in six innings.

Jordyn Pike gave up one earned run on five strikeouts and three walks in seven innings as the winning pitcher for Gilbert. Pike also hit two doubles and scored twice on offense.

ALLEMAN - Nevada never got it going against North Polk June 14 at Alleman as the cubs surrendered four runs in each of the first two innings en route to a 12-0 loss in four innings.

After jumping out to an 8-0 lead North Polk added three more runs in the third and one in the fourth to end the game early. Nevada finished with only two hits and North Polk tallied 13.

Riley Mailey and Addi Vorm each singled for Nevada. Ellie Gray and Mackenzie Garrett drew one walk apiece and Caitlyn Sharp stole two bases.

Garrett was the losing pitcher. She gave up seven earned runs on 13 hits with two walks and one strikeout in four innings.

Ellie Owen went 3-for-3 with a double, homer, two runs and an RBI and Rebecca Rimathe homered twice and drove in five runs for the Comets. Bailey Hougham had five strikeouts and three walks in four innings as the winning Comet pitcher.
