DES MOINES - Nevada was done in by a bad second inning against Saydel in a Heart of Iowa Conference baseball outing Friday at Saydel High School in Des Moines.
The Cubs gave up nine runs in the second on their way to a 16-1 loss in four innings.
Nevada came out strong against a powerful Eagle team. The Cubs led 1-0 after one inning.
But in the bottom of the second, Saydel got hot and Nevada never recovered, falling to 6-3 on the season and 5-3 in the HOIC.
Trent Stahl doubled, walked and scored and Macade Matuska singled and drove home Stahl for the Cubs on offense. Tyler Shafer added a single and a walk, Jack Higgins singled and Bronzon Mason and Preston Cattanach each walked once.
Drew Hardy allowed three earned runs with five walks and two strikeouts in 1 ⅓ innings to take the loss. Devon VanHouten allowed one run on three hits with four strikeouts and walks apiece in three innings to get the win for Saydel.
Brandon Reese homered and drove in five runs and Nate Sepich scored four times for the Eagles on offense.

PRAIRIE CITY - Nevada wasn’t able to sustain a quality start against Prairie City-Monroe in a 7-3 loss to the Mustangs June 7 at Prairie City.
The Cubs led 3-0 going into the bottom of the fourth inning. All three Nevada runs came in the second inning.
But PCM pulled within one after four innings and added two more scores in the fifth to go in front. The Mustangs tacked on three more unanswered scores in the sixth to pull away.
Nevada finished with seven hits. Preston Cattanach was 2-for-3 with two RBI and Bronzon Mason was 2-for-3 with a double and a run as the top Cub hitters.
Tyler Shafer singled, walked and drove in a run and Jack Higgins and Macade Matuska both singled and scored for Nevada.
Cattanach was the losing pitcher after giving up three runs on six hits with four strikeouts and three walks in four innings. Brock Dutton allowed four runs on three hits and walks apiece with two strikeouts in 1 ⅓ innings and James Carsrud tossed ⅔ of a scoreless inning with one walk.
Ethan Thomas was 2-for-2 with a home run and three RBI and Noah Clark knocked in two runs for the Mustangs.
Noah Henkenius was the winning pitcher after allowing three runs on seven hits with two strikeouts and one walk in 6 ⅔ innings.

NEVADA - Great pitching and defense did the job for Nevada in a 2-1 victory over Greene County June 5 at Billy Sunday Field.
Tyler Shafer held Greene County to a single run in the fourth inning. Shafer worked around seven Ram hits, thanks to quality Cub defense, and he also had great control, striking out nine with no walks.
Nevada scored a run in the first inning and plated the eventual winning run in the fifth. The Cubs prevailed despite just five hits.
Shafer and Macade Matuska both singled, scored and drove in a run. Trent Stahl went 2-for-3 and Bronzon Mason also singled for the Cubs.
Thomas Crawford, Drew Hardy and Preston Cattanach each drew one walk for Nevada.
Austin Delp struck out nine batters in seven innings for Greene County in a losing effort. Delp also knocked in a run and Trey Tucker doubled and scored for the Rams.
