NEVADA - The Nevada softball team was plagued by slow starts in a double header with No. 7 (Class 2A) Collins-Maxwell-Baxter Monday in Nevada.

The Cubs gave up six runs over the first three innings in the first game — the continuation of the suspended season opener between the two teams. They also allowed 10 runs over the first two frames in the nightcap as they were swept by scores of 10-0 and 12-0, with both games going five innings.

The Cubs are having a tough time getting out of the blocks in games. They’ve been outscored 33-0 in the first three innings of a five-game stretch, dating back to a 5-1 home loss to Hampton-Dumont last Tuesday.

“Really what it’s boiling down to is they’re trying so hard to be perfect or hit that ball that makes the difference when if they’d relax and ‘see ball, hit ball’ or ‘see ball, catch it,’ we’d be a lot better,” Nevada head softball coach John Bass said. “It’s a process we’ve got to keep working through. We’ve got to have a windshield mentality where we’re looking ahead and not so much from behind.”

The two losses put Nevada at 2-9 overall and 1-8 in the HOIC.

In the first game against CMB, the only Cub hit off Raider pitcher Abbey Kahler was a single by Gracie Barloon. Madi McGaffin was the losing Cub pitcher.

The second game saw the Cubs get singles by Riley Mailey and Libby Burlage in the second inning. Mackenzie Garrett took the loss on the mound as she allowed 15 hits and one walk and finished with one strikeout.

Kahler had 13 strikeouts in the first game and Mikayla Houge fanned nine Cub batters, getting the win in the nightcap.

DES MOINES - Nevada had trouble maintaining consistency on offense in a 7-3 loss to Saydel Friday in Des Moines.

Nevada was productive at the plate, totaling nine hits. But the Cubs failed to get a good string of hits together and they also went without an extra-base knock, falling to 2-7 overall and 1-6 in the Heart of Iowa Conference.

Ellie Gray, Grace Francis and Riley Mailey each collected two hits for Nevada. Francis also scored one run.

Mackenzie Garrett went 1-for-3 with two RBI, Mady Farmer finished 1-for-3 with one RBI and Addi Vorm singled and scored. Caitlyn Sharp also stole a base and scored for the Cubs.

Garrett took the loss on the mound. She gave up four earned runs on seven hits with two strikeouts and one walk in six innings.

MONROE - Nevada ran into too much firepower against Prairie City-Monroe June 7 in Monroe as the Cubs gave up 18 hits in an 11-1 loss in five innings.

Nevada allowed one run in the first inning — then PCM broke the game open with five in the second and three more in the third. PCM hurt Nevada with six extra-base hits and four steals; the Cubs only tallied two hits.

Riley Mailey singled and scored Nevada’s only run in the second inning. Sydney Mosinski went 1-for-2 with a steal and an RBI and Mady Farmer, Grace Francis and Libby Burlage each drew a walk.

NEVADA - The hits didn’t come in time for Nevada in a 5-1 non-conference loss to Hampton-Dumont June 6 in Nevada.

The Cubs only had one hit over the first five innings, falling behind 4-0. Over the final two innings they produced three hits and drew two walks to put pressure on Hampton-Dumont.

Nevada was only able to put one run on the board. In the bottom of the sixth Grace Francis doubled, Addi Vorm singled and Mackenzie Garrett knocked in Francis on a ground out.

Hampton-Dumont countered with a solo home run by Nadilee Eiklenborg in the top of the seventh.

Nevada tried to rally in the seventh as Ellie Gray and Emma Griffin both walked and Katie Sullivan had a pinch-hit single to load the bases with two outs. But they were left stranded on a close call after Francis hit a grounder and was called out after running into Bulldog first baseman Kiara Donaldson.

“It was close — the way it’s been running for us the last few games we’re not going to get that break,” Nevada head softball coach John Bass said of the ball hit by Francis. “The girls are playing hard, but we have to really learn to win.”

Better consistency at the plate over the full game will go a long way toward getting Nevada over the hump, according to Bass. Nevada struck out 14 times against Bulldog pitcher Kylie Voy.

“We’ve got to get a better approach at the plate,” Bass said. “When we do that, good things will happen. I thought in the second half of this game we had a better approach at the plate.”

Madi McGaffin took the loss in her first start at pitcher for Nevada. McGaffin allowed two runs — one earned — on four hits with three walks and two strikeouts in three innings.

Garrett gave up three runs on five hits with one walk in four innings.

Courtney Miller was 3-for-4 with a walk, three steals and three runs for Hampton-Dumont on offense. Cassy Miller was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI for the Bulldogs.
