MCCALLSBURG - Nevada took advantage of strong pitching from Mackenzie Garrett and big hits by Grace Francis to edge Colo-Nesco, 3-2, in a non-conference softball rivalry game May 30 at McCallsburg.
Garrett gave up just one unearned run on eight hits. She finished with three strikeouts and no walks, helping Nevada win its second in a row to go to 2-1 on the season.
Francis finished 2-for-3 with a double and she drove in all three Nevada runs. The Cubs scored once in the third inning, then went up 3-0 with two runs in the fifth.
Mady Farmer was 1-for-4 with a walk, run and two steals and Riley Mailey ended up 1-for-3 with two walks for the Cubs. Addi Vorm was also 1-for-3, Caitlyn Sharp scored twice and Garrett, Libby Burlage, Samara Sharp and Ryanne Barker each walked once for the Cubs.
Colo-Nesco fell to 2-3 with the setback. The Royals scored once in the bottom of the fifth and added another run in the seventh to get within striking distance before falling just short.
Mackenna Ruffcorn gave up two earned runs with eight strikeouts and six walks over seven innings of work to take the loss on the mound. Molly Barten was 2-for-3 with two RBI and Lauryn Hill also went 2-for-3 at the plate for Colo-Nesco.
Ruffcorn added a double, Kassie Robinson singled and scored and Mckenzie Niemeyer also scored once for the Royals. Rylee Purvis and Gracie Kettwig each chipped in one hit apiece.
