NEVADA - The Nevada baseball team picked up a huge Heart of Iowa Conference victory Friday with a 2-1 home victory over Gilbert at Billy Sunday Field.

Brilliant pitching from Tyler Shafer helped Nevada improve to 3-0 on the season, as well as in the HOIC. Shafer gave up one unearned run on just two hits with five strikeouts and two walks in 6 ⅔ innings to get the victory.

Nic Brown struck out the only batter he faced to get the save for Nevada.

Trent Stahl was 2-for-3 with a run to lead Nevada’s six-hit attack on offense. Shafer singled, walked twice and scored the game’s only run, and Jack Higgins and Macade Matuska both singled and drove in one run.

Preston Cattanach added one single and a steal for the Cubs. Kyle Bauman and Cam Shill each drew one walk.

ALLEMAN - Nevada used a strong finish to get past traditional Heart of Iowa Conference power North Polk, 5-3, May 25 at Alleman.

The Cubs outscored the Comets 3-0 over the final four innings to overcome a 3-2 deficit and improve to 2-0 overall and in the HOIC.

Nevada went in front in the top of the fourth inning.

Thomas Crawford and James Carsrud drew walks and Preston Cattanach was hit by a pitch to lead off the Cub half of the fourth. Tyler Shafer drove in the tying run on a North Polk error and Cam Shill followed with a single to drive in Carsrud and give Nevada the lead.

The Cubs were unable to score again in the inning. But thanks to strong pitching, they held their lead the rest of the way.

Brock Dutton threw 1 ⅓ scoreless innings in relief to get the win for Nevada. Dutton gave up one hit and three walks.

Cattanach allowed three runs on three hits with three walks and one strikeout in three innings as the Cub starter. Shafer tossed 1 ⅔ scoreless innings with one strikeout and walk apiece, Drew Hardy tossed a scoreless ⅔ of an inning with one walk and Macade Matuska got the final Comet out to pick up the save.

Cattanach was 2-for-2 with two runs and RBI apiece at the plate. Shafer and Shill both singled and drove in a run, Trent Stahl added one single and Jack Higgins knocked in one run.

Carsrud walked three times and scored twice, Matuska drew two of the 11 free passes received by Nevada and Crawford walked and scored.

Ben Rupe singled and scored, Colten Parkins walked and drove in a run, Adam Moxley walked and singled and Jeff Lamp added one hit for North Polk. Colby Cupp walked twice and scored once and Ryan Spaulding also scored a run for the Comets.

Clark Hood allowed four runs with five walks and and three strikeouts in 3 ⅓ innings to take the loss for North Polk. Rupe gave up one run with six walks and three strikeouts in 3 ⅓ innings and Jake Johnson picked up a strikeout in ⅓ of an inning of work for the Comets.

COLLINS - Nevada turned in a strong performance against Collins-Maxwell-Baxter to open the season May 22 at Collins as the Cubs started strong on offense and received quality pitching and defense in a 7-1 victory.

Nevada did all of its scoring over the first three innings. The Cubs scored once in the first inning and three more times in both the second and third frames.

CMB didn’t get on the board until scoring a run in the bottom of the sixth. That’s all the Raiders could muster against the Cub pitching trio of Tyler Shafer, Brock Dutton and Nick Brown.

Shafer was the winning pitcher after throwing four scoreless innings with nine strikeouts and only allowing two hits and one walk. Brock Dutton gave up one run on two hits with three strikeouts and walks apiece in two innings and Nic Brown gave up one hit and didn’t allow a run or a walk in one inning of relief.

On offense Shafer went 2-for-2 with two walks, runs and RBI apiece plus one steal. Cam Shill was 2-for-4 with a run and RBI apiece and Drew Hardy also went 2-for-4 and scored one run.

Jack Higgins singled, walked and drove in two runs. Preston Cattanach went 1-for-2 with a walk, two runs and an RBI and Macade Matuska knocked in one run.

Travis Lindemoen had two singles and Brady Ross and Brady Kemp one apiece for CMB in a losing effort. Creighton Caple walked and scored the Raider run and Ian Thomson walked once and picked up an RBI.

Kemp gave up seven runs - six earned - on seven hits with five walks and four strikeouts in 3 ⅓ innings to take the loss for the Raiders.
