A handful of Bluejays and Jayettes took their talents to the track at this season’s State Tournament, which started on Thursday.

The competition hosted at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa welcomed in a plethora of athletes all vying to be called State Champions.

On Thursday, Perry High School was well represented with seven student athletes lining up for a total of four Class 3A events - three individual and one team.

Grace Stewart, Perry junior, was up first in the 3000-meter preliminary run. She finished 23rd out of 24 runners, recording her best time this season, 12:02.

Five events later fellow junior Reece Dunlap was just 6-hundredths of a second short of qualifying for the finals in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.82 seconds for ninth overall.

At event 99 the 4x800 team of Brandon Kenyon, Rashon Ivory, Zachary Thompson and Kaleb Olejniczak finished the prelims 11th out of 24 teams with a run of 8:18.89.

Perry’s final competition of the day came in the 400-meter dash with both Dunlap and Adan Medina, senior, finished ninth and 13th. Dunlap ran the event in 50.81 seconds while Medina finished less than a second behind at 51.55 seconds.

Today the Jayettes’ distance team of Rachel Kinney, Breanna Penenger, Haley Vaughn, and Sidney Vancil compete in the prelims versus 24 other teams.

The Bluejays 4x400 team of Dunlap, Alexis Garrido, Kenyon and Medina close out the afternoon of preliminaries. They are set to race in Heat-3.

On Saturday Kenyon, along with the 800 Distance team of Manassess Martinez, Dunalp and Medina compete in Heat 1.

A few events later Kenyon will be back on the track when he faces 23 other runners in Heat 2 of the 800-meter run.
