BOONE - The Heart of Iowa Conference girls’ golf championship belongs to Nevada once again as the Cubs defeated Gilbert by 12 strokes for their third championship in four years May 2 at the Cedar Pointe Golf Course in Boone.

Nevada stepped up to shoot a 371 over 18 holes. That was good enough to comfortably top Gilbert’s score of 383 for the conference title.

“I am very happy to have won the conference title after we had a rough showing there last year,” Nevada head girls’ golf coach Mike Lawler said. “We’ve played six 18-hole tournaments already and I’ve been very pleased with the team’s increased stamina and progress this season. We continue to improve and find areas that still need improvement every day.”

The Cub girls prevailed, thanks to strong performances from all six competitors at the varsity meet. Nevada produced four of the top 10 individual scores and all six Cub golfers shot under a 120.

“I’m very proud of the depth that we have developed as a team and I think that really shows in these bigger tournaments,” Lawler said. “It’s been a great blessing to have the depth and experience that we have this year.”

Three-time state participant Claire Ausman set the pace for Nevada with a score of 88. Ausman was remarkably consistent, shooting a 44 both in and out to place fourth overall.

Emma Griffin came in sixth individually for Nevada. Griffin shot a 90 with a 46 in and a 44 out.

Chloe Davis placed eighth and Kelby Rewerts 10th as the other scored golfers for Nevada.

Davis shot a 95 with rounds of 49 and 46. Rewerts was close behind with a 98 after she carded a 52 on the front and shaved six strokes off that score down the backstretch.

Savannah Kyle was close behind the scoring group for Nevada with a 104. Kyle turned in nine-hole rounds of 54 and 50.

Madison Huynh completed the scoring for Nevada with a 119. Huynh shot a 63 in and 56 out.

Gilbert’s Britta Snyder was the conference medalist with a 77. Prairie City-Monroe’s Bre Maher was medalist runner-up with an 84 and Greene County’s Rachael Danielson placed third with an 87.
