GRINNELL - The Nevada boys’ golf team made a big statement Monday by winning the Grinnell Invitational at the Grinnell Country Club.


Nevada shot a 325 over 18 holes to beat Des Moines Christian by 12 strokes for first in the five-team tournament.


Cam Shill stepped up with nine-hole rounds of 37 and 40 to shoot a third-place score of 77 as the top Cub golfer. Dylan Sporrer carded a fifth-place score 79 with rounds of 37 and 42.


James Carsrud came in eighth with an 83 after turning rounds of 40 and 43. Tyler Sansgaard also scored for Nevada after shooting an 86 with identical rounds of 43.


Preston Shill shot a 91 and Harold Dobernecker a 96 as the other varsity competitors for Nevada.


Grinnell’s Lucas Scherf and Spencer Tucker were medalist and medalist runner-up respectively after they each shot a 76.

AMES - Nevada finished in the top three of a nine-team 18-hole tournament at the Gilbert Invitational Saturday at the Ames Golf and Country Club.


The Cubs shot a 330 to finish third behind Gilbert (310) and Boone (325). ADM was right behind Nevada in fourth place with a score of 332.


“We knew it would be difficult to compete with Gilbert on their home course,” Nevada head boys’ golf coach Ryan Brown said. “They did not disappoint. We have traded blows with Gilbert all season, they gave us their best today, unfortunately we did not have an answer for that.”


Nevada’s top individual efforts came from James Carsrud and Dylan Sporrer.


Carsrud shot rounds of 38 and 41 to finish with a 79. Sporrer tallied an 81 with rounds of 43 and 38.


Harold Dobernecker chipped in an 83 with a 41 and a 42. Tyler Sansgaard shot an 87 with nine-hole scores of 42 and 45 to turn in the final counted score for Nevada.

WEBSTER CITY - Nevada stepped up to tie Gilbert for second in the four-team 18-hole Lynx Invitational at the Briggs Woods Golf Course in Webster City May 4.


The Cubs shot a 325 to match Gilbert and finish 34 strokes ahead of Ballard’s fourth-place score. Webster City won the meet with a 306.


“A good performance for us today at a very difficult golf course,” Nevada head boys’ golf coach Ryan Brown said. “This meet was a good preview for our sectionals on Friday. A great day for Preston Shill and Cam Shill. We are going to need solid performances like this on Friday in order to advance through sectionals and onto districts.”


Cam and Preston Shill were the top golfers for Nevada at Briggs Woods. Cam shot a 79 with a 40 in and 39 out and Preston tallied an 80 with rounds of 43 and 37.


Dylan Sporrer and Tyler Sansgaard each finished with an 83 for the Cubs. Sporrer turned in rounds of 42 an 41 and Sansgaard shot a 43 in and 40 out.


James Carsrud and Harold Dobernecker also competed for Nevada. Carsrud shot an 88 and Dobernecker an 89.
