STATE CENTER - The Nevada boys’ golf team was a little off at the West Marshall Invitational Monday at the Lincoln Valley Golf Course.

The Cubs were unable to crack the top three in the final team standings out of 14 schools competing in the team tournament. Nevada shot a 331 to place fourth, finishing nine strokes out of first place.

“We didn’t play our best team golf tonight,” Nevada head boys’ golf coach Ryan Brown said. “We gambled several times and it didn’t pay off. You have to learn to evaluate the risk and reward opportunities. Sometimes you make your luck, sometimes you don’t. Good learning experience for as we continue to grow and mature.”

Nevada’s biggest issue on Monday was managing the greens.

“At Lincoln Valley you really need to keep the ball below the hole — we didn’t do a very good job of managing green-side situations,” Brown said. “When you get above the hole, the greens get slippery and to tough to make par. When you keep burning the edges, the strokes slowly add up as a team.”

Cam Shill turned in the best score for Nevada. He shot a 79 with nine-hole rounds of 39 and 40 to place seventh overall.

Dylan Sporrer carded an 82 for the Cubs with two rounds of 41. Tyler Sansgaard shot a 43 on the front and shaved two strokes off that score down the backstretch to finish with an 84.

James Carsrud turned in the final counted score for Nevada. He shot an 86 with two rounds of 43.

Harold Dobernecker added an 89 and Preston Shill a 91 to complete the Cub scoring.

Colo-Nesco also competed at the tournament. The Royals placed 14th with a 488.

Tyler Anthony had a 51 on the front and 52 on the back to pace Colo-Nesco with a 103. Jacob Clatt shot a 111 with rounds of 51 and 60, Evan Dodd put up a 112 with a 54 on the front and 58 on the back and Jared Roberts ended up with a 122 with nine-hole rounds of 60 and 62.

Grinnell’s Lucas Scherf easily won medalist after shooting a three-under-par 69. Oskaloosa’s Spencer Tucker was medalist runner-up with a 73.
