Recent city council discussions about the future of Memorial Auditorium followed by a Monday article announcing the Burlington School District “eyes plans for a high school auditorium” seem to be well-timed.
Memorial Auditorium, which is used sporadically, and another school district auditorium, which would also be used infrequently, are two buildings the taxpayers of Burlington should not be asked to fund.
It’s time for the City and school district to work together to make one building — Memorial Auditorium — serve both.
While it might not be ideal, surely it could provide a more-than-adequate site to showcase local student talent, along with its current focus of Civic Music and SnowBull.
As costs to build and maintain such structures continue to escalate, communities must work together to get full value out of their investments.
