Gerold Eugene "Gene" Warren, age 76 of Boone, Iowa and formerly of Nevada and Leon, Iowa, died February 18, 2014 at the Madrid Home in Madrid, Iowa. The son of Byron and Bertha (Myers) Warren, Gene was born May 4, 1937 in Sullivan County, Missouri.
He grew up around the Green City, Missouri area, eventually moving to Nevada, Iowa. For 20 years, Gene worked for and later owned the Nevada Cleaners. Selling the business in 1972, Gene and his family moved to Leon. Gene then had a long career as a contract electrician for both commercial and residential. He was a partner in O&W Electric, which later became Warren Electric. To be near his grandchildren, Gene moved to Boone in 1988 and was employed by Nikkel and Associates until his retirement.
Gene was united in marriage to Bonnie Deloris Rumley on July 1, 1963 in Harrison, Arkansas. To this union Bonnie brought two children, Wade and Terri. Later, daughter Shelley and son Kevin were born into the family.
Gene was a member of the Leon and Nevada Lions Club, the Leon Volunteer Fire Department, and taught CPR in Leon. He was a league bowler in Nevada, enjoyed playing guitar at country music jams, talking on his CB with the handle "HotWire," and taking an interest in the paranormal and UFO’s.
Favorite memories of Gene’s children include sledding, mushroom hunting, and pheasant and quail hunting. Gene loved his family and grandchildren, and also his "Great Grand-Pugs" Giovanni, Bailey, and Tucker. Gene was a man who always put everyone else in front of himself. He helped care for his mother, raised his children, and cared for his wife Bonnie.
Preceding Gene in death were his parents, and sister Mary in infancy.
Surviving are his wife Bonnie Warren of the Madrid Home; children: Wade Nehman, Terri "Wiener" Redman (Doug) of Fort Dodge, Iowa, Shelley Reed (Clinton) of Nevada, Iowa, and Kevin Warren (Angel) of Nevada, Iowa; grandchildren: Jamie Redman Sanchez (Chris) of Chicago, Illinois, Justin Redman of Fort Dodge, Destiny Reed of Nevada, Iowa, Kelby Warren of Boone, and Samantha Warren of Nevada, Iowa; sister Mildred Backoff of Nevada, Iowa; sister-in-law Alberta Smith of Madrid; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Saturday, February 22, 2014 at Slade-O’Donnell Funeral Home in Leon, Iowa with Rev. Carla Werre officiating. Burial was in Leon Cemetery.
