Mary Jane Goethals, 97, of Nevada, passed away Sunday, April 1, 2018, at Story County Senior Care in Nevada.
Mary Jane was born April 24, 1920, in Gowrie, Iowa the daughter of John and Ida Hoff. She graduated from Gowrie High School and was united in marriage to George Goethals on March 12, 1944, in Des Moines. Mary Jane taught at the Lanyon and Des Moines Public Schools after earning her bachelor’s degree from Iowa State University in 1943. She then joined her husband in Liberia, W. Africa, for 24 years before returning to Iowa and earning her master’s degree from Iowa State University. She taught art for Nevada Public Schools for 13 years. Mary Jane spent her last five years as a resident at Story County Senior Care.
Mary Jane was a member of Memorial Lutheran Church in Nevada. She enjoyed art, gardening, playing Bingo and bridge and traveling.
Mary Jane is survived by her daughters: Valerie Goethals of Nevada and Mary Lou (Dan) Haddock of Nevada; her grandson, Travis Haddock of Nevada; her nieces and nephews: Rita Derrick, Harold (Linda) Hoff, Rick (Angie) Steiner and Danita (Dave) Weimer. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her brother, Kenneth Hoff; her sister, Helen Richard and her nephews: Darrell Hoff and Marvin Derrick.
Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Friday, April 6, at Memorial Lutheran Church in Nevada with Pastor Myron Herzberg officiating. Family will greet friends one hour prior to the service. Inurnment will be at a later date at the Nevada Municipal Cemetery in Nevada.
