Karen Arlys Bappe, 66 of Nevada, peacefully passed away Sunday, October 22, 2017 with her husband and three children by her side at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.
Karen was born December 7, 1950, in Fosston, MN to Helmer and Helen (Dahl) Evenson. She graduated from Fosston High School in 1969. In 1973 Karen graduated from Lutheran Deaconess College of Nursing in Minneapolis, MN to start her long and dedicated career to the nursing profession. She was a Registered Nurse at the University of Iowa Hospitals, McFarland Clinic, and most recently Mary Greeley Medical Center. Karen was a compassionate and professional nurse who was often a special request by her patients. While visiting her sister Meg in Hawaii, Karen met her husband Dan on a North Shore beach where he was stationed with the U.S. Army. They married on May 29, 1976, in Fosston, MN. During their 41 years together Karen and Dan lived in El Paso, TX; Iowa City and Nevada, IA while raising their three children Adam, Brian, & Cara.
Karen loved being part of the Nevada community. She was an active member of Memorial Lutheran Church, American Business Women’s Association and the Lincoln Highway Days Committee. She enjoyed reading, playing bunco with the ladies, camping and the outdoors. Most importantly she treasured being with friends and family and always put them first. She also enjoyed watching her kids’ activities and cheering on the Iowa Hawkeyes and Minnesota Twins. She especially loved decorating for holidays and having friends and loved ones in her home. Her recent years were devoted to spoiling her grandchildren who were undoubtedly the light of her eye. She was a selfless, caring, and loving person who left a lasting impact on anyone that knew her.
Karen is survived by her husband Dan of Nevada; her sons: Adam (Naomi) Bappe of Longmont, CO and Brian Bappe of Roland; her daughter Cara (Aaron) Randall of Roland; her grandchildren: Ava and Nora Bappe and Greyson Randall; her brother Paul Evenson of Missoula, MT; and her sister Meg (Jim) Wheeler of The Villages, FL.
