William Robert Armstrong, 65, passed away August 31, 2017, after a stoic battle with carcinoid cancer.
Bill, Steamboat Bill, Cap’t Billy was born to J. Philip and LaVon (Nelson) Armstrong in Ames, IA, on January 14, 1952, the second of four children. He spent his early elementary years at schools in Fernald, Ames and Nevada. In 1968, his family moved to Dubuque, IA, where he graduated in 1970 from Dubuque Senior High.
Bill was a Master river boat pilot, licensed by the US Coast Guard. Most recently he worked for Hanson Material Service, Romeoville, IL, on the Chicago River.
He enjoyed classic cars, drawing, writing poetry (Beyond Prairie’s Rim), and creating art through his welding. In 2013, Bill moved to his own little piece of paradise north of Andrew, IA, KMA Acres.
He is survived by his sons Phil Armstrong of Hazel Green, WI, and Nick Armstrong, Inglewood, CA; siblings Marty (Duane Swanson) of Ames, IA, John/Bo (Michelle) Armstrong of East Dubuque, IL, Mike (Sharon) Armstrong of Keller, TX; partner Dianne Schneider and special friends Mike and Jill Post, Nevada, IA. He also leaves behind several nieces, nephews and a boatload of friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.
Services have been held; his cremains will be interred at the Ames Municipal Cemetery, Ames, IA.
