On Friday, July 5, at approximately 8:50 p.m., Polk County Sheriff’s Office received a call reporting a two-vehicle head-on collision in the 7700 block of NE 94th Avenue. Polk County Sheriff Deputies, along with Bondurant Fire and Rescue, were dispatched to the scene. When emergency personnel arrived, one vehicle was found on the roadway, the second in the north ditch of NE 94th Avenue.

The driver of the first vehicle, Gary Ross Bushman, 46, of Collins and formerly of Nevada, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the second vehicle, 59-year-old Donald Anderson of Marshalltown, received minor injuries, but refused treatment at the scene. Anderson was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident. Sgt. Brent Long of the Polk County Sheriff’s Office said he does not know if Bushman was wearing a seatbelt, as Long arrived at the scene after emergency personnel had begun attending to Bushman.

Probable cause of the collision appears to be that Bushman was travelling in the wrong lane of traffic, according to witnesses and preliminary investigations. Witnesses said Anderson began to move into the opposite lane to avoid a collision, and at the last minute, Bushman began to move back into his correct lane, Long said.

An autopsy performed Monday, July 8, determined Bushman’s cause of death was multiple blunt force trauma, suffered during the collision. Polk County Sheriff Deputies will continue to investigate the accident.
