Retiring from position as middle school vocal music teacher

How long have you taught in the Nevada District? 29 years

Did you teach in other places, or hold other jobs, before starting here?

I taught four years in Radcliffe, K-12, and owned the Kiddie Kampus Preschool in Nevada for four years.

What led you into a career of teaching music? Always loved performing and my mother had always wanted to pursue a music career, so she definitely encouraged me by making sure I had piano and voice lessons.

What have you loved most about this profession? Middle school kids love you, hate you, love you and always keep you on your toes. Helping them discover the joy of performing has kept me young and active. I will miss that.

What is special about working with the level of students you are working with now? Performing "Grease the School Edition" with this middle school group was a great way to end my career. I remember the movie coming out during my first years of teaching. To be able to share the fun with this group was a great way to end my career.

What things have changed most since you began teaching? The school is expected to take on a more parental role now. If it’s not there, we are expected to fill the role. Hopefully that will swing back, but I’m not sure that is possible in this day. Technology is a huge change. I have embraced that, and that has been exciting.

What have you loved about teaching in Nevada? Nevada is a community that has embraced me through good and hard times. I will never forget how supportive this school was when I lost my son. They truly have looked out for me. Nevada has been a great place to work.

How exciting was it to be part of the process for the Josephine Tope Community Auditorium? I consider being a part of that process part of my legacy. Seeing something from its beginnings to its conclusion was an amazing experience for me. To know that it will exist for literally thousands of people to enjoy the things that I loved and taught is an inspiration to me.

What are you looking forward to most about retirement? Having time to enjoy my horse hobby and my little dog, Cash.
