The Iowa 2014 Matthew Shepard Scholarship Program is seeking to identify students who would qualify for scholarships, one of which is up to $40,000.
March 1 is the deadline to apply for the award, which goes to an "openly lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and/or queer Iowa high school student." Scholarship awards are based on academic aptitude, academic achievement, community service and financial need. The scholarships honor Iowa students with the courage to be open in their schools and communities, and are named in memory of Matthew Shepard, a student at the University of Wyoming, who in 1998 was severely beaten and left to die because he was gay.
