Physician Assistant Shane Mikel Higgins, who works as a provider at Story Medical Clinic in Nevada, has good news for patients. Higgins is extending his hours, now working from 7 a.m.-5 p.m. (an hour earlier), Mondays through Thursdays; 7-11 a.m. on Fridays and one Saturday each month.

"I’m trying to accomodate my patients by opening an hour earlier, before school or work," Higgins said.

For those not yet familiar with Higgins, he came to the Nevada Clinic in January of 2010 to do family practice and emergency medicine. He has an extensive background in sports medicine, and was elected Sports Medicine Specialist of the Year in 2009 by the Iowa HIgh School Ahtletic Association.

Higgins holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Iowa State University and a physician assistant degree from Des Moines University. He worked from 2003-2010 in Vinton at Virginia Gay Hospital and Vinton Family Medical Clinic. He also worked in the St. Luke’s Hospital emergency room in Cedar Rapids from 2009-2010.

Higgins and his wife, Shari, have five children: Jack, 13; Grant, 11; Ella, 9; Alec, 7 and Drew, 3. Shari has a degree in elementary education, but is very satisfied as a stay-at-home at this time.

Higgins said he is happy with his family’s move to Nevada. "We have met a lot of great friends and business professionals through our kids’ sporting events, Rotary, the booster club, church … We are very pleased with the Nevada School District and school administrators. There are a lot of great educators here for the kids, and they are truly in it for the right reasons."

Higgins said he also feels good about the direction the community is going. "The town and city officials have done a good job of progressing Nevada; there are so many great things to come."
