John and Karen Jensen, Jensen Farms, Ankeny, traveled to Nevada High School on Wednesday, Aug. 28 and purchased a John Deere 953 running gear for $550.

The gear was originally donated to the FFA by Dean and Lucas Tjelmeland in 2009. The Jensens are planning to put a box on the gear to haul pumpkins for the local market in Ankeny. John explained to the students that his dad came to America from Germany in 1928. John started farming by doing custom work around Bondurant, Farrar and Ankeny.

Today, Jensen Farms operates 7,400 acres in Central Iowa. In addition, they annually custom harvest 12,000 acres of wheat with four John Deere combines. They start cutting wheat in Oklahoma and end up in Canada as the season progresses.
