On Thursday, Feb. 6, four Nevada High School Band members traveled to the University of Northern Iowa Festival of Bands. Those going were Lydia Richards (senior flute), Madeline Mathis (junior oboe), Brooke Mackey (junior trombone) and Baylee Milam (sophomore baritone saxophone). The students were selected based on their success in the band program. Three days were spent in rehearsals with guest directors, Thad Driskell of Cedar Rapids and Denis Salvini of Italy. Students also attended a concert with the UNI Wind Symphony, which included clarinetist Elizabeth Schlotfeldt, Nevada class of 2011. Lydia Richards also received a very high honor. The festival holds a solo scholarship competition, which is highly competitive. Richards was named as honorable mention, the only recognition other than the winner. (Submitted photo)
