Nevada and Cambridge firefighters responded to a blaze late Tuesday afternoon that started in a car and quickly spread to the rest of the garage where the vehicle was parked, authorities said.

The Nevada Fire Department was called to the Dean Robertson residence, at 60222 250th Ave., about 3 miles southwest of Nevada just after 5:30 p.m., said assistant Nevada Fire Chief Jeff Stensland. Cambridge responded as mutual aid.

The car and the unattached garage where it was parked were a total loss, Stensland said. The garage also contained tools and various other items, Stensland said. Stensland estimated the loss at around $45,000.

The cause of the fire wasn’t immediately known, but Robertson told authorities he had been having trouble starting the car. When he tried to start it again it backfired and he saw smoke coming up from the console, Stensland said.
