The city of Nevada would like to remind residents of the shelter location and of the policy for siren activation within the city.
The city of Nevada maintains a tornado shelter in the basement of the public library. Construction has not affected the basement, thus Nevada Police officers will open the shelter at the first indication of a tornado warning for our area. Residents are encouraged to use the shelter if it will increase their protection from where they are staying or doing business, and if there is time to travel to the shelter location based on the current weather report.
The city will sound the outdoor sirens based on the policy recommended by Story County Emergency Management. Siren activation will occur during a tornado warning for our area, or when Emergency Management has determined that sustained winds of 70 miles per hour or hail larger than an inch and a half are imminent. Winds of over 70 mph and hail of that diameter can be deadly if encountered during a storm and their presence requires shelter immediately. Remember that outdoor sirens are used for outdoor warning. Residents should always monitor weather conditions through local media sources or a weather radio. Wind, indoor air conditioners and other distractions can affect the ability to hear an outdoor siren inside your home or business.
