Some years ago in an effort to aid research to produce the Cemetery Walk, Dorian Myhre of the Nevada Community Historical Society entered over 5,000 graves from the Nevada Municipal Cemetery on Find-A-Grave. This website is a valuable resource to historians and genealogists as it enables linking family members to one another, in addition to posting biographies and photos.

This past week, Myhre scanned several dozen photographs from an album of Civil War Veterans of Story County in possession of the historical society. She then posted them on the memorial site for each veteran on the Find-A-Grave website. “It is gratifying when I am contacted by a descendant who has the chance to gaze upon the face of their ancestor for the first time.” The historical society also holds photo albums of family and friends of the Dyer-Dowell family which Myhre has scanned and posted on the website.

Myhre also researched the family history of Nevada families whose properties the historical society owns, such as the Briggs, Duttons, Childs, Halleys, Dyers and Dowells. As the family trees developed and eventually contained identical individuals, she merged the trees into one huge family tree. This tree is posted on the Story County GenWeb site. She regularly submits updates to the “NCHS Family Tree Project,” now numbering over 66,000 individuals.

“I like that anyone can access these sites free of charge. When we get inquiries regarding individuals, we often can simply refer people to these two sites,” Myhre said.
