As thermometers soared above 90 on Sunday, many made their way through the heat to attend Nevada’s 2018 commencement ceremonies at Nevada High School. This year’s class selected a faculty member, Ryan Brown, to speak. Brown’s message encouraged the young people before him to stop looking down — down at their cellphones and down upon other people in judgment. Rather, he encouraged, look up at all there is around you to get involved in. He encouraged students to turn off their cellphones, turn off video games and Netflix, and instead to get involved in life. And when it comes to good friends, he advised, seek counsel from your real friends, who will tell you what you need to hear, rather than your Facebook friends who will tell you what you want to hear.
