Runners United Nevada has announced details for the 5th annual Story County Freedom Run and Pancake Breakfast. The event will take place on Saturday, June 30, at Story County Medical Center, 640 S 19th St., Nevada. Included in the day’s events are a 5k race, a one-mile walk, a children’s fun run and a pancake breakfast. All money raised will be donated, as in the past years, to Story County Freedom Flight.
“Runners United Nevada is excited to take on the organizational duties of this annual event for a great local cause,” said Dane Nealson, 2018 race director. “I am excited to be involved once again in raising money to benefit true American heroes who have sacrificed so much to defend the freedoms we enjoy on a day-to-day basis. It is extra exciting to be able to run this event as an unofficial kick-off to the week we celebrate America’s independence.”
Story County Freedom Flight honors Story County veterans from World War II, Korea, Vietnam and Desert Storm for their sacrifices by sending them to Washington, D.C., to visit the memorials from their respective wars. More recently, veterans were taken to the Middle East Conflicts Memorial Wall in Marseilles, Ill. The organization is currently coordinating with nearby Freedom Flight groups to send veterans who were unable to make earlier trips with the Story County Group, and has funded a number of home projects to benefit local veterans. Story County Freedom Flight is in its seventh year of operation, and was awarded the Governor’s Volunteer Recognition Award by Gov. Terry Branstad in 2013 for their efforts.
