Five people were hospitalized after the Story County Sheriff’s Office said that two vehicles were involved in an accident in rural Story County.
According to Story County Sheriff’s Office Captain Barry Thomas, deputies responded to a personal injury accident at the intersection of 190th Street and 580th Avenue involving a 2003 Chevrolet Silverado truck and a 2015 Chevrolet Equinox SUV.
According to authorities, the driver of the Silverado, Ivan Walker, 21, of Nevada, was northbound on 580th Avenue, where he failed to stop at the stop sign, and collided with the Equinox, which was traveling west on 190th Street about 8 1/2 miles northeast of Ames. The Equinox struck a power pole in the northwest ditch, where both vehicles came to a rest.
The driver of the Equinox, Ashley Huey, 27, of Nevada, was extricated from the vehicle and transported to Mercy Medical in Des Moines by Mary Greeley ambulance. One of the Equinox passengers, Samuel Huey, 28, also of Nevada, was transported to Mary Greeley Medical Center by Story County ambulance. Another Equinox passenger, Katharine Newman, 58, of Harrellsville, N.C., was also injured and transported by Life Flight to Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.
There was also an infant male in the Equinox, who was transported privately to Mary Greeley Medical Center.
Shelby Biery, 17, of Collins, was a passenger in the Silverado, and also needed to be extricated from the vehicle. Biery was transported to the Ames Municipal Airport by Mary Greeley ambulance, where she was then transported by Life Flight to Mercy Medical Center.
None of the injuries appeared to be life-threatening.
Walker was cited for failure to obey stop sign. Deputies do no believe that drugs or alcohol were contributing factors to the crash.
