William F. Ball Unit #48 Nevada American Legion Auxiliary members attended the Department Convention held in Des Moines July 21-23. Nevada was recognized for the work they have done; Chris Lloyd for education, Sheila Cruse for raising funds for the Auxiliary Emergency Fund and Mary Jo McLaughlin for public relations. They also made their membership goal for the year.
The national president, Mary Davis from the State of Washington, was in attendance and gave words of encouragement to continue to work our mission for our veterans. Members attended an impressive Color Guard contest by participating posts, as well as enjoyed a concert by the Iowa Veterans Band. Fun was also had raising funds for Nicole Clapp from Gladbrooke, who will be our national president in our centennial year.
Sunday was the installation of new officers. Vickie Klinkhammer from District 2 is the department president for the new year. The theme she chose for the Auxiliary for the year is “America Runs Free Because of Those Who Served Our Country.” Her pin included a white mustang horse decorated in blue forget-me-nots and red poppies. The combination of blue and red is purple, so the color purple will often be used this year. The symbols of the American Legion Family surrounds the horse, as her two goals are for all units to work together as an American Legion Family and to increase membership.
The Nevada unit will work hard this year to achieve those goals, so that our veterans will not be forgotten and everyone with a veteran in their family has the opportunity to honor their veterans by their membership in the American Legion Family.
