The Iowa Pharmacy Association (IPA) is pleased to announce that Brett Barker, Pharm.D., of Nevada, is the recipient of the association’s 2017 Distinguished Young Pharmacist award. The award was presented during IPA’s 2017 annual meeting on June 16 in Coralville.

Barker is the vice president of operations for NuCara Management Group, which owns and manages over 20 full-service community-based pharmacies in Iowa, Texas, Illinois, North Dakota and Minnesota. He has been instrumental in the progression of pharmacy practice in Iowa. Through his work in telepharmacy, he is bringing health care to rural areas and expanding services that pharmacists can provide. He is active in his community, serving on the Nevada City Council and playing in the community band. In March, he was appointed by Gov. Terry Branstad to the Iowa Board of Pharmacy.

“Brett embodies of the spirit of this award, having truly distinguished himself very early in his career,” said Kate Gainer, Pharm.D., IPA’s executive vice president and CEO.

The Distinguished Young Pharmacist of the Year award recognizes a pharmacist within their first 10 years of practice for their involvement and dedication to the pharmacy profession. The award was created in 1987 to encourage young pharmacists’ participation in association and community activities, and is part of a national awards program co-sponsored by Pharmacists Mutual Companies and state pharmacy associations.
