An accident on U.S. Highway 30 near Colo left two people injured and forced authorities to redirect traffic around the crash site Thursday evening.

The Story County Sheriff’s Office responded to the crash near 680th Avenue about 5:40 p.m. Thursday.

Sheriff’s Deputy Brett Sink said two vehicles were eastbound in the right-hand lane on U.S. 30, one behind the other.

Sink said the driver of the first car, Katherine Galpin, 50, of Ames, slowed to turn right, when the driver of the second vehicle, Brenda Evans, 51, of Collins, struck the rear of Galpin’s car.

The collision caused Galpin’s car to spin around and come to rest in the middle of the eastbound lanes of U.S. 30, Sink said.

Evans’ vehicle came to rest in the ditch east of 680th Avenue.

As authorities investigated the accident, the Colo Fire and EMS redirected eastbound traffic around the scene.

Evans was injured and taken by ambulance to Story County Medical Center in Nevada. A juvenile passenger in Galpin’s car was also injured, and taken by ambulance to Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames.

Evans was cited for failure to stop in assured clear distance ahead. Galpin was cited for failure to provide proof of insurance.
