Colo Fire and Rescue received a grant through the 2016 Prairie Meadows Community Betterment Grant program. The grant was for $5,000 for volunteer protection. Colo Fire reports that studies have shown that carcinogens are carried in the protective gear and clothing that a fireman wears during fire ground operations. These carcinogens will be imbedded in the material long after returning from the scene unless washed off. The industrial washer, purchased with the grant funds, will allow Colo’s fire volunteers to wash their entire set of gear in one shot. A washer of this size will allow faster washing and drying time. It allows Colo’s volunteers to be back on the job protecting the community quickly, all the while protecting the volunteers from carcinogen contamination during the next call or training event when the gear will be worn.
