The Emergency Residence Project is in the process of revitalizing our back yard area. At this time, we would like a group of volunteers, anywhere from six to 10 would be ideal, to move and spread mulch. CITY OF AMES AND IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY


The city of Ames, in partnership with the ISU Office of Sustainability, is seeking volunteers to assist with the “Rummage RAMPage,” a new event planned for the end of July to keep reusable items out of the landfill during move out and lease changeovers. Volunteers can dedicate their hours to participating agencies who will receive a portion of the proceeds based on the total number of volunteer hours served. Dates for the event are July 27 to Aug. 2.


CLEANING CREW


EMERGENCY RESIDENCE PROJECT


We have a current need for a small to medium size group of volunteers to come in and clean apartments that have just turned over in our transitional living program so we can move new families in. While there is no set date for the project, we would like to have the apartments cleaned as soon as possible. Duties would include vacuuming, washing windows, cleaning appliances, washing walls, cleaning bathrooms and possibly cleaning carpets.


ARCHIVIST


AMES HISTORICAL SOCIETY


We are looking for volunteers to help create finding aids for our archival materials. Our archives includes meeting minutes, documents, and photographs from community organizations and businesses. Volunteers will be fully trained on the project. Volunteers typically choose a time to come in each week, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., Tuesdays through Saturdays.


MEAL PREPARATION


EMERGENCY RESIDENCE PROGRAM


Typically, a group will prepare a meal for anywhere from eight to 12 people. Most volunteers bring in meals already prepared, but occasionally a group will choose to cook the meal here. We are able to work with you individually to choose the option best for your group. Most groups provide their own food ingredients, but if you decide to prepare something here and wish to be creative with whatever you find on hand, you may be able to do that, too, if our food inventory is plentiful enough at the time. Volunteers arrive shortly before dinner time, which is at 5:30 p.m., to drop off the prepared meal. If the group chooses to serve the meal and eat with the shelter guests, they arrive early enough to set up the dining room, serve the meal, then clean up after.

LIFELINE INSTALLATION


MARY GREELEY MEDICAL CENTER


This volunteer job involves installing LifeLine equipment, an at-home device that helps allow independence and people to stay in their homes. Volunteers assist by helping to install the equipment in homes and explain how each device works. Skills: Customer service, experience with technical equipment a plus, flexibility, ability and desire to work in homes with patients. Hours: Varied, weekdays are usual for installation. Schedules can be arranged with staff per volunteer availability.

Lend a hand at our youth summer enrichment program held at the Huxley library. We offer a fun and safe environment for kids to participate in engaging, academically based activities. This opportunity is flexible and one hour shifts are available any time during the program’s hours of operation. Program sessions are conveniently located within the Huxley library. Our program dates are June 4 through July 27. Specific shifts will be worked out individually between the site coordinator and interested volunteers.

Serve as a CYtes Ambassador; answering questions, issuing visitor parking passes, and pointing people in the right direction. Shifts are from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and from 9 a.m. through 2 p.m. on Saturdays. The ideal candidate would have a strong understanding of ISU campus facilities and the Ames community as a whole.

Join our team and have a “hand” in carrying out the Days of Services, special events, and project offered by the VCSC. Team members will provide leadership, logistical support, and ideas. PILLOWCASE PROJECT PRESENTER

The pillowcase project is a free interactive preparedness program designed for youth ages eight to 11. The program aims to increase awareness and understanding of natural hazards, teach safety and emotional coping skills, as well as importance of preparedness. Students learn the best ways to stay safe during disasters and how to create their own emergency supply kits using a pillowcase. Pillowcase Project presenters will receive training prior to placement.

We are looking for volunteers to help digitally scan our photographs and 35mm slide collectors. Easy to use scanning equipment is available at our museum and volunteers will be trained on how to properly use the equipment. We are open from noon to 5 p.m. Wednesdays through Fridays. Volunteer time should be within that frame if possible.

Provide on-call support to American Red Cross disaster respondents in the field. Open client cases using Client Assistance Software (CAS), load client assistance cards and provide technical assistance to in-field respondents. This volunteer position requires that some online training be completed before volunteer placement. This is a virtual position that can be done from anywhere in the state of Iowa.

Creative Counseling has two openings on our Board of Directors. Our board meets a minimum of quarterly and meetings are generally from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Tuesdays. We are looking for individuals wanting to make a difference in our community. We provide substance abuse and mental health services in Story County. We are a nonprofit agency and 70 percent of our clients utilize Medicaid.

Volunteers should enjoy working with people, be able to work relatively quickly, and be unashamed to ask for help from a manager if a question arise that needs additional support.

The Story County LEPC is in need of a volunteer to assist the LEPC with improving their ability to plan for emergencies. The volunteer will contact businesses in Story County that work with hazardous chemicals to verify emergency contact information and to encourage participation in the LEPC organization. Hours are flexible but would need to be during office business hours of 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.


FOOD PANTRY VOLUNTEERS


MID IOWA COMMUNITY ACTION, FAMILY DEVELOPMENT CENTER


Mid Iowa Community Action is seeking volunteers to help in their food pantry in Ames daily, Monday through Friday between 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. depending on volunteer availability. Volunteers will greet and assist families coming into the Family Development Center, help stock food pantry shelves and maintain the pantry and work closely with the front office staff. Volunteers under the age of 18 must volunteer with an adult. Flexible shifts are available each day the pantry is open.

TEAMMATES MENTORING – NEVADA CHAPTER


Tom and Nancy Osborne founded TeamMates in 1991 in an effort to provide support and encouragement to school-aged youth. The goal of the program is to see youth graduate from high school and pursue post-secondary education. To reach this goal, youth met once a week, at the Nevada Middle School, with a caring adult who serves as a mentor. Mentors give youth a sense of hope, purpose, and vision.
