Edwin and Jan Klaas, from Ames, were guests at the Senior Potluck on Monday. Ed gave a most interesting program about the history and development of Ada Hayden Heritage Park.

The Hallatt’s gravel mining operation was started in the 1950s and by the late 1970s the city of Ames was already talking about what could be done with the property when the pit was no longer operational. In the late 1990s, several ideas were strongly considered but by 2001 it had been decided that it would be designated as a park. A bond issue, as well as money from the city and county, helped to get the development started.

Each year brings new additions to the park, including the placement of Heritage Stones at several locations honoring famous Iowa conservationists. The Iowa Fisheries Dept. recently started stocking trout in the lake, many of which are caught by winter ice fisherman.

Ed encouraged all of us to take the time to visit this Story County treasure while the weather is still nice this summer.
